It’s so awesome to discover an artist before anyone else has, but being able to help them make their way to the top is even more exciting. Today I’m pumped to share with you guys a Moombroton exclusive and Producer Profile from the still 17 year old moombahcore master Kromofone! This kid came out with the monstrous remix of Daft Punk and has been smashing the game since then. Not only do we have a new original from him that I could only compare to Daft Punk’s style, but also an in depth look at the life of this Slovenian DJ. Check this one out and enjoy!

Name, age, and hometown

Matej, 17 years old, Slovenia

How did you get started with music?

I first started with music when I was like 4 years old. At that time, I was introduced to drums by my uncle who had played in a rock band; I have been just practicing on a his drum set for a few years. When I got the right feel for drum-playing at the age of 7, my parents signed me into music school for drums and percussion. A few years later – during my learning of drums, my music teacher entered me for me for the Regional and national competition of young musicians in drums and percussion. I got a gold medal at the regional competition one and an award for the national one. I also played in 2 rock bands but had to quit both of them, because I had too much work and studying in school.

What made you start producing electronic music?

Basically, I have never been interested in producing electronic music, until my friend in school told me about FL Studio. I was very interested in what the program was for (I didn’t know what it was for at the time beeing). When I first started it up, it was really confusing. I tried to make some stuff up but it was all a fail at that moment. Couple of months later, I learned how to produce proper electronic music, as I also got to know FL Studio better. I listened to lots and lots of house music and house subgenres (being electro house, tech house, house, progressive house,…). And until this day I am still experimenting (meaning in producing lots of different genre style of music like glitch hop, moombahton, moombahcore, ambient,…), training and learning in FL Studio, but I must say, personally that I really got better in time when I was producing in the past.

Who has been your biggest influences on the style of music you create and why?

There are so many of them, but I will try to name a few that really changed the way that I listen to and look at music till today. My biggest influence, when I was first starting producing, was definitely Deadmau5, because he was like my childhood music hero. When I wanted good electronic music, I would go and listen to Deadmau5, because he makes songs that you remember forever. Others were Wolfgang Gartner, Thomas Gold, Starkillers, Freemasons, Jim Connor, Pam Pero, Tom Neville, Junkie XL, Daft Punk, Hoxton Whores, Uppermost,… As I said, there are so many that I can’t even count. As for this moment, my biggest influence is Knife Party for electro house, Umek for tech-house, Tristan Garner for Progressive House,…

Do you think living in Slovenia has effected the kind of music you make?

It definitely has, Slovenia has this unique style of electronic music, the producers here like Umek and Beltek are very different from the others in different countries, when it comes to producing. They take time, when it comes to perfecting the sound and that really made a big influence on me in the past and in the present that I will never forget.

If you could collaborate with any current producer, who would it be and why so?

Well, I will say it like this: there are a lot of producers out there, that I would love to colaborate with and maybe in the future I will be able to get that chance.
Of course, I have some great collaborations planned in the future with Dr. DennieJay, who is like a brother to me and can’t wait to do a collab with him. But mainly I have to say I would love to collaborate with producers like Knife Party, Deadmau5, Wolfgang Gartner, Koan Sound, Opiuo, Beltek and Umek, those were the first ones to come to mind.

What would be your dream festival/venue to play at?

Dream festival, hmmm…Maybe UMF Festival, or at Ibiza. I don’t know, honestly, because at the moment I am playing at small events in Slovenia and don’t know any more big events throughout the world, except the ones that I said before. But whatever festival, venue, event or concert I will be able to play at, I am always excited to play, because that is who I am and I will keep producing and DJ-ing as long as I can.

With the possibility of this year being huge for you, what can we expect from Kromofone in the coming days?

If I do get into the ”bigger electronic scene out there”, I will most likely be doing many new tracks, purchasable on Beatport, when I get on a label, and also free downloads (I call them freebies). As for the style of my tracks, mainly I will be producing electro house, tech house, house, progressive house, moombahcore. As for some tracks aside that, maybe some glitch hop, dubstep, ambient tunes.
